Take The Stress Out Of The Exam
Planning, preparation and perseverance are the keys to success when it comes to ensuring you get the results you want for examinations
The exam period is always a stressful time, but in my
experience there are several things that can be done to alleviate the pressure
both before and during the assessment.
What follows is the advice I always give to my anxious
colleagues long before their assessment. Otherwise I find they nearly go bald
from scratching their heads and inadvertently stifle their hunger by chewing on
the end of their pens while trying to force out information for their
assessment.
1. Prepare
Preparation is the key to any
examination. You will never go far wrong If you have prepared adequately
beforehand. Studying well is the one proven way to succeed in any test. Of
course, you may think you actually have time before exam date draw near but if
you want to avoid having to rush through piles of books for long hours, why not
start studying along time before your exam dates? When the exam draws closer
you will have more time to relax and revise what you know already.
2. Spend time on your
study plan
Studying
without plan is an all too common mistake by students and it often proves
extremely costly when the exam results are revealed. So, to ensure you prepare
thoroughly, set up a study timetable and establish a format that must be
followed religiously. This ensures all the learning outcomes are covered
equally and adequately.
3. Banish fatigue
Eat well,
exercise and find the time to relax your mind-each of us has our own way to
relieve the pressure before the exam day. But one of the essentials when it
comes to handling the exam pressure well, is to ensure you are getting enough
sleep. Most importantly, you need to sleep well the night before your exam,
especially if it is a morning paper. That way you do not have to battle fatigue
in the exam and you will feel refreshed, sharper and more alert.
4. Logistics matter
it is
crucial to ensure you know the location of the examination venue, as well as
your exam dates and times. You may also want to familiarize yourself with the
venue area prior to the exam day. It will then become easier for you to plan
your time and arrival without the confusion of having to find the exam venue,
especially where hired halls are used and where the area is prone to traffic
jams. Planning ahead like this also helps to reduce stress on the day.
5. Read the
instruction and the questions
When you are in the exam hall
and raring to go, take the time to read the instruction and the read the
questions. Make sure you have understood the questions and the command words.
This way you will take fewer mistakes and all you have sweated for the past
term will be rewarded. Incase you are wondering how, it’s by providing the
right answer to the right question. Start with a question you know well, and
even before you start writing it, list down your points and supporting
information on the other side you don’t forget them. The chances of forgetting
key points under pressure are high and you want to avoid that. This method will
help give you a reference paper as well as the argument to support your point.
Don’t be surprised if your answer looks short, just keep going and write down
what you know.
6. Be persistent
Attempt all
questions, even the ones you are not sure of. You will not be marked down for
wrong answers but the examiners cant give anything for questions that haven’t
even been attempted. Remember, aim for the moon and if you miss you will land
among the stars.
Good luck! I hope you make it and let me be the first to
congratulate you on passing your exams
This is so handy for us novice👌Thank you Mukhtar.
